Thanks a lot for sharing your concerns about chemobrain with us, or as referred to by its medical term: chemotherapy induced cognitive impairment.

Most research is being done on elucidating the reasons behind the development of chemobrain, because we still know very little about it. A lot of the research done parallels the research done on Alzheimer’s disease. Chemobrain is likely the combination of multiple factors and these are being evaluated. Among these for example are, beside chemotherapy, psychological states (eg, depression, anxiety), the presence of fatigue or menopause, and other comorbid conditions.

On the treatment front, it is difficult something that we do not understand. The focus of research and treatment however is on the benefit of the following:

  • Relaxation
  • Physical exercise
  • cognitive rehabilitation
  • Brain-training computer-based programs
  • neurofeedback
  • Group cognitive rehabilitation intervention
  • Pharmacologic interventions  with central nervous system stimulants such as modafinil and methylphenidate. The drug donepezil (used in Alzheimer’s disease ) is also being studied.

Hope this helps
