Are brain metastases different from primary tumors?

This is a very common question. Many people contact us saying their loved one has “brain cancer” when they really mean that they have brain metastases. Brain metastases are different from primary brain cancer. True brain cancer also referred to primary brain cancer develops when normal cells in the brain change into cancerous cells and start growing out of control. In contrast, brain metastases secondary to another tumor come develop from cancer cells from another part of the body that have spread to the brain.
