Regarding your question about whether cancer has an ancestor. The answer is yes and this is what we refer to as familial cancer, in which the parents transfer a defective gene to their children that will lead to cancer. This happens in around 10% of cancer cases

Regarding your question about why the cells decide to stop growing, the reality is that this is a process that usually takes years and does not happen overnight. The commonly accepted theory is that the cell acquires a mutation and then few years down the road acquires another mutation. With every new mutation, the cell becomes more resistant to death and ultimately grows out of control.
