Lupus on its own reduces life expectancy although we have made dramatic improvements over the last few years with >90% survival rate after 10 years of diagnosis. Lupus, for speculated reasons of autoimmunity can also result in higher rates of cancers of around 10%. The most common cancers are lymphoma, prostate, lung and thyroid. When thyroid cancer develops, the life expectancy depends on the type of thyroid cancer as different types and stages affect that expectancy. In general however, the life expectancy should be close to another normal person affected by thyroid cancer.
